観察研究のrisk of bias（RoB）を評価するためのツールで、コクランのRoBに準じた６つのドメインから構成されています。また、GRADEに対応した評価となっています。

非ランダム化試験の方法論的な質評価としては、200を超えるチェックリストやツールがあります。有名なツールの1つとしてNew castle Ottawa Scale（NOS）がありますが、信頼性が低く、偏った結果の研究を同定できないため改訂の必要性が指摘されています。
GRADEシステムにおいても、観察研究のための限界（limitations/risk of bias）評価のための基本的な基準を発表しています。（「診療ガイドラインのためのGRADEシステム参照」
今回紹介するツールは、RoBANS（Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies）というもので、昨年発表されたものです。
